Kashihara Kogyo Co., Ltd. established at Hiroshima-ken in 1962 as an iron works related to shipbuilding. Working on manufacturing tanks for ships, OEM production for ship machine manufacturers, and cutting processing by the laser processing machine.
In 2011, Kashihara Kogyo introduced the 3D laser scanner, and started reverse engineering work such as 3D measuring and point cloud data modeling service. They have various experience of measuring and creating a drawing /model for buildings (ship engine room/ plant/ factory) and historical buildings that need earthquake-resistance.

Measuring and modeling work for various industry

Necessity of modeling 3D CAD data

Measuring by a 3D laser scanner sometimes gets blind area, therefore its point cloud data will not be perfect data compared to the real one.
But when modeling 3D CAD data from this point cloud data, the conjecture and drawing information help to complete blind area. Because of this, visibility of 3D CAD data is better than point cloud data.
Moreover, in 3D CAD data, it’s able to be treated as “material” not “point,” and it makes operations better. For example, standardized products such as pipes, we can create according to the standard even if the pipe has painting or rust or insulation material. By doing this, the data receiver can use the data as “readable” and “usable” practical data.

Requirement for modeling software and cooperation with our own system

Considering efficiency, the most ideal usage is modeling only required areas, and if there’s only checking interference purpose, just use the point cloud data, not modeling.
But in the case of modeling work in Kashihara Kogyo, the work environment depends on the client. There are a lot of cases the client doesn’t have a system which is able to use the point cloud data and the 3D data. That’s why we deliver general 3D CAD data files. Modeling all required areas makes the client complete their work with only 3D CAD data.
Therefore, the importance of modeling software for Kashihara Kogyo is wide area modeling efficiency. ClassNK-PEERLESS fulfills this requirement. And Kashihara Kogyo provides its own PC and a tablet viewer to make a difference between competitors. Clients can effectively use the data.

Future tasks

Generally, most people think modeling takes huge man-hours. Some people in Kashihara Kogyo think the same, so I’d like to solve this problem. Moreover, The volume of point clouds in our business is gradually increasing. Because of this, establishing an efficient modeling method for large point clouds is also our future task.

ClassNK-PEERLESS effect

Kashihara Kogyo installed ClassNK-PEERLESS when its sales started, for the purpose of reducing modeling cost. The operators reported “The modeling work has gotten more comfortable because the view operation response is fast” and “Reduced stress of modeling work”. Currently, we use ClassNK-PEERLESS mainly for the modeling of a ship and a plant. It depends on the modeling target, but It reduced 25% of work hours compared to the past.

Keeping productivity by using overseas corporation

Installation of ClassNK-PEERLESS improved work efficiency, but still has some future tasks. Dealing point cloud still takes huge labor, and its work volume is uneven. It makes hard to have full-time staff in Japan. Therefore, Kashihara Kogyo utilized its own Vietnam office for point cloud work. Kashihara Kogyo offered the Vietnam office some jobs (EX: creating prototype 3D models for a product or cutting data) before starting point cloud work. This expanded work variation kept productivity stable.

In Vietnam, there are a lot of young diligent engineers. This makes it easier to get employees than in Japan. Kashihara Kogyo is especially putting effort into the staff education for providing detailed output with low cost. Through the Internet, a complementary relationship is building between Japan that has a lot of repair demand and Vietnam that hasn’t enough workplaces for young people.

Future

Now, Kashihara Kogyo is offered jobs from various industries because of a lot of our modeling experiences. The detailed output which is based on experience so far is also Kashihara Kogyo’s strong point. Moreover, providing better output is Kashihara Kogyo’s purpose.

In order to do that, we expect Armonicos that reflect to the system our request and pursue more efficient modeling operations.
Especially, there is high demand for dealing with 3D models in the client’s system, same as native data. So, Kashihara Kogyo expects the system development to promote utilization of point cloud data, and standardizing data importing/exporting among various industries.
